Hope does not lead to disappointment. Romans 5.5.
Jehovah promised his friend Abraham that all nations of the earth would be blessed by means of his offspring.
[Quotation] Genesis 15.5: He now brought him outside and said: “Look up, please, to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to do so.” Then he said to him: “So your offspring will become.” [End Quotation]
[Quotation] Genesis 22.18: And by means of your offspring all nations of the earth will obtain a blessing for themselves because you have listened to my voice.’” [End Quotation]
Because Abraham had deep faith in God, he was convinced that God’s promise would come true. Even so, when Abraham was 100 years of age and his wife was 90, that faithful couple still did not have a son.
[Quotation] Genesis 21.1 through 7: Jehovah turned his attention to Sarah just as he had said, and Jehovah did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 So Sarah became pregnant and then bore a son to Abraham in his old age at the appointed time God had promised him. 3 Abraham named his newborn son, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, just as God had commanded him. 5 Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him. 6 Then Sarah said: “God has brought me laughter; everybody hearing of it will laugh with me.” 7 And she added: “Who would have said to Abraham, ‘Sarah will certainly nurse children’? Yet, I have given birth to a son for him in his old age.” [End Quotation]
Yet, the Bible says: “Based on hope, [Abraham] had faith that he would become the father of many nations according to what had been said.”
[Quotation] Romans 4.18: Although beyond hope, yet based on hope, he had faith that he would become the father of many nations according to what had been said: “So your offspring will be.” [End Quotation]
You know that Abraham’s hope was realized. He did become father to the son he had long hoped for, Isaac. What was the basis for Abraham’s confidence? Because of his close personal relationship with Jehovah, Abraham was “fully convinced that what [God] had promised” would come true.
[Quotation] Romans 4.21: and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to do. [End Quotation]
Jehovah approved of Abraham and declared him righteous because of his faith.
[Quotation] James 2.23: and the scripture was fulfilled that says: “Abraham put faith in Jehovah, and it was counted to him as righteousness,” and he came to be called Jehovah’s friend. [End Quotation]

To the director; upon Muth-labben. A melody of David.

9.1 I will praise you, O Jehovah, with all my heart; I will tell about all your wonderful works.
9.2 I will rejoice and exult in you; I will sing praises to your name, O Most High.
ב [Beth]
9.3 When my enemies retreat, They will stumble and perish from before you.
9.4 For you defend my just cause; You sit on your throne judging with righteousness.
ג [Gimel]
9.5 You have rebuked nations and destroyed the wicked, Blotting out their name forever and ever.
9.6 The enemy has been ruined forever; You uprooted their cities, And all memory of them will perish.
ה [He]
9.7 But Jehovah is enthroned forever; He has firmly established his throne for justice.

9.12 For the One who avenges their blood remembers them; He will not forget the cry of the afflicted.
ח [Heth]
9.13 Show me favor, O Jehovah; see my affliction by those hating me, You who raise me from the gates of death,
9.14 So that I may declare your praiseworthy deeds in the gates of the daughter of Zion, And rejoice in your acts of salvation.
ט [Teth]
9.15 The nations have sunk down into the pit they made; Their own foot has been caught in the net they hid.
9.16 Jehovah is known by the judgment he executes. The wicked one has been ensnared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion.
(Selah)
י [Yod]
9.17 The wicked will retreat toward the Grave, All the nations who forget God.
9.18 But the poor will not always be forgotten; Nor will the hope of the meek ever perish.
כ [Kaph]
9.19 Rise up, O Jehovah! Do not let mortal man prevail. May the nations be judged in your presence.
9.20 Strike them with fear, O Jehovah, Let the nations know that they are only mortal men.
(Selah)
ל [Lamed]
10.1 Why, O Jehovah, do you stand at a distance? Why do you hide yourself in times of distress?
10.2 The wicked one arrogantly pursues the helpless one, But he will be caught in the schemes he devises.
10.3 For the wicked one boasts about his selfish desires And blesses the greedy one;
נ [Nun]
He disrespects Jehovah.
10.4 In his haughtiness, the wicked man makes no investigation; All his thoughts are: “There is no God.”
10.5 His ways keep prospering, But your judgments are beyond his understanding; He scoffs at all his adversaries.
10.6 He says in his heart: “I will never be shaken; For generation after generation I will never see calamity.”
פ [Pe]
10.7 His mouth is full of curses, lies, and threats; Under his tongue are trouble and injury.
10.8 He waits in ambush near the settlements; From his hiding place he kills an innocent one.
ע [Ayin]
His eyes are watching for an unfortunate victim.
10.9 He waits in his hiding place like a lion in its lair. He waits to seize the helpless one. He seizes the helpless one when he pulls his net shut.
10.10 The victim is crushed and brought down; The unfortunate ones fall into his clutches.
10.11 He says in his heart: “God has forgotten. He has turned away his face. He never notices.”
ק [Qoph]
10.12 Rise up, O Jehovah. O God, lift up your hand. Do not forget the helpless ones.
10.13 Why has the wicked one disrespected God? He says in his heart: “You will not hold me accountable.”
ר [Resh]
10.14 But you do see trouble and distress. You look on and take matters in hand. To you the unfortunate victim turns; You are the helper for the fatherless child.
ש [Shin]
10.15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man, So that when you search for his wickedness, You will find it no more.
10.16 Jehovah is King forever and ever. The nations have perished from the earth.
ת [Taw]
10.17 But you will hear the request of the meek, O Jehovah. You will make their hearts firm and pay close attention to them.
10.18 You will render justice to the fatherless and to those who are crushed, So that mortal man of the earth may no longer make them afraid.
To the director. Of David.
11.1 In Jehovah I have taken refuge. So how can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain!
11.2 See how the wicked bend the bow; They set their arrow on the bowstring, To shoot from the darkness those upright in heart.
11.3 When the foundations are torn down, What can the righteous do?”
11.4 Jehovah is in his holy temple. Jehovah’s throne is in the heavens. His own eyes see, his watchful eyes examine the sons of men.
11.5 Jehovah examines the righteous one as well as the wicked one; He hates anyone who loves violence.
11.6 Upon the wicked, he will rain down snares; Fire and sulfur and a scorching wind will be the portion of their cup.
11.7 For Jehovah is righteous; he loves righteous acts. The upright will see his face.
To the director; tuned to Sheminith. A melody of David.
12.1 Save me, O Jehovah, for the loyal one is no more; Faithful people have vanished from among men.
12.2 They speak lies to one another; They flatter with their lips and speak with deceitful hearts.
12.3 Jehovah will cut off all flattering lips And the tongue that makes great boasts,
12.4 Those who say: “We will prevail with our tongues. We use our lips as we please; Who will be our master?”
12.5 “Because the afflicted are oppressed, Because of the sighing of the poor, I will rise up to act,” says Jehovah. “I will save them from those who treat them with contempt.”
12.6 The sayings of Jehovah are pure; They are like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times.
12.7 You will guard them, O Jehovah; You will protect each one of them from this generation forever.
12.8 The wicked walk around unrestrained Because the sons of men promote depravity.
To the director. A melody of David.
13.1 How long, O Jehovah, will you forget me? Forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
13.2 How long will I have anxious concern, With grief in my heart each day? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
13.3 Look upon me and answer me, O Jehovah my God. Give light to my eyes, so that I may not fall asleep in death,
13.4 So that my enemy will not say: “I have defeated him!” Do not let my opponents rejoice over my downfall.
13.5 As for me, I trust in your loyal love; My heart will rejoice in your acts of salvation.
13.6 I will sing to Jehovah, for he has richly rewarded me.
To the director. Of David.
14.1 The foolish one says in his heart: “There is no Jehovah.” Their actions are corrupt, and their dealings are detestable; No one is doing good.
14.2 But Jehovah looks down from heaven on the sons of men To see whether anyone has insight, whether anyone is seeking Jehovah.
14.3 They have all turned aside; They are all alike corrupt. No one is doing good, Not even one.
14.4 Do none of the wrongdoers understand? They devour my people as if they were eating bread. They do not call on Jehovah.
14.5 But they will be filled with great terror, For Jehovah is with the generation of the righteous.
14.6 You wrongdoers try to frustrate the plans of the lowly one, But Jehovah is his refuge.
14.7 O that Israel’s salvation may come from Zion! When Jehovah gathers back his captive people, Let Jacob be joyful, let Israel rejoice.
A melody of David.
15.1 O Jehovah, who may be a guest in your tent? Who may reside in your holy mountain?
15.2 The one who is walking faultlessly, Practicing what is right And speaking the truth in his heart.
15.3 He does not slander with his tongue, He does nothing bad to his neighbor, And he does not defame his friends.
15.4 He rejects anyone who is contemptible, But he honors those fearing Jehovah. He does not go back on his promise, even when it is bad for him.
15.5 He does not lend his money on interest, And he does not accept a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things will never be shaken.
A miktam of David.
16.1 Protect me, O God, for I have taken refuge in you.
16.2 I have said to Jehovah: “You are Jehovah, my Source of goodness.
16.3 And the holy ones in the earth, The majestic ones, bring me great delight.”
16.4 Those who pursue other gods multiply their sorrows. I will never pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will my lips mention their names.
16.5 Jehovah is my portion, my allotted share, and my cup. You safeguard my inheritance.
16.6 Pleasant places have been measured out to me. Yes, I am content with my inheritance.
16.7 I will praise Jehovah, who has given me advice. Even during the night, my innermost thoughts correct me.
16.8 I keep Jehovah before me constantly. Because he is at my right hand, I will never be shaken.
16.9 So my heart rejoices, my whole being is joyful. And I reside in security.
16.10 For you will not leave me in the Grave. You will not allow your loyal one to see the pit.
16.11 You make known to me the path of life. In your presence is abundant joy; There is happiness at your right hand forever.
