[A yellow school bus stops in front of a house. A stop arm swings out, and doors open. School girl boards bus wearing a salwar kameez, bringing a notebook, passes Sophia sitting with her brother]
Boy 1: Who is that?
Boy 2: Does she go to our school?
[A wad of paper strikes schoolgirl. She turns and looks at the two boys. Sophia frowns, shoulders droop, she gazes out the window. Bus arrives at school]
Teacher: Good morning, everyone. We have a new classmate. Her name is Priya, from India.
Boy 3: She’s from where?
Girl 1: I dunno. I’ve never heard of it.
Teacher: OK, so let’s work in pairs again. Who needs a partner and can team up with Priya?
[Priya wilts, as Sophia smiles and raises her hand, a classmate shoves in next to her]
Girl 2: Hey, Sophia. We’re a team, right?
[Girl grins with an assuming smile]
Sophia: Um, yeah. OK.
Girl 2: OK, great! So, for the first page, I’m thinking we can do this and then that.
[As Priya reaches for a chair in the lunchroom, boy flings backpack into it]
Boy 2: This is taken.
[Priya stares down and shifts toward another chair, girl pulls seat away. Sophia looks on, mouth open eyebrows raised. She recalls her time at the Kingdom Hall]
Speaker: So, what did Jesus teach us to do to be a real neighbor like the Samaritan? Sophia?
[A microphone is placed in front of Sophia]
Sophia: He taught us to show love and kindness when somebody needs help.
[In the lunchroom]
Priya!
[at her table Sophia stands and waves]
Over here!
[Sophia warmly smiling. Priya cautiously smiles back]
Hi! I’m Sophia.
Priya: Hello.
Sophia: I like your outfit.
Girl 3: Where did you get it?
[Priya sits]
Priya: My mom made it. It’s from my country. They call it a shalwar kameez. This one is my favorite color.
Sophia: What’s it like where you lived?
